25 British criminals arrested in Amsterdam area Police asks for assistance of the public in the hunt for British fugitives Via the website www.depolitiezoekt.nl , the police are asking for assistance of the public in the hunt for British fugitives. Since October 2008, the police Amsterdam-Amstelland arrested 25 Brits in her region. The Brits were sentenced for or suspected of serious criminal activities.

“We want to make it clear to the British fugitives that Amsterdam and the surrounding of Amsterdam, is not a safe haven for them”, declares commissioner Liesbeth Huyzer, member of the board and responsible for the Criminal Investigation Department within the police corps of the police Amsterdam – Amstelland. That’s why we are asking for the support of the public by placing pictures of wanted criminals on www.depolitiezoekt.nl.”

In cooperation with the British Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), Crimestoppers UK, the Public Prosecutor’s Office Amsterdam, and the foundation M, the Amsterdam police is actively searching - under the name “Operation Return” - for British fugitives who are in the Netherlands. They often appear to be hiding in Amsterdam and the surrounding of Amsterdam. That’s why the hunt for British fugitives has increased in the past 18 months; as a result of that, 25 persons have been arrested so far. They were wanted in the UK for serious crimes like: manslaughter, armed robberies, theft using violence, or the import of and trade in narcotics or firearms.

As a token of gratitude for all the effort and arrests, some detectives from Amsterdam will be receiving a special award from the board of SOCA, which will take place in London on 23 March. As from today, the pictures of 6 persons will be visible on the website www.depolitiezoekt.nl . The persons are believed to be hiding in Amsterdam or the surroundings of Amsterdam.

In the television broadcast of Opsporing Verzocht of tonight, attention is given to 1 of the 6 cases. In the television broadcast of the regional investigation programme “Ter Plaatse” of tomorrow, attention will be given to all cases, because we expect that the suspects concerned are in our region.

Liesbeth Huyzer, police commissioner for Amsterdam-Amstelland (member of the board and responsible for the criminal investigation department) said: "We are already very successful in arresting British fugitives. The last 1,5 year we arrested 25 of them. We don't want these criminals to hide out in our region and that's why we ask the help of the public to get information to arrest more of these fugitives.

Mr. Herman Bolhaar, chief prosecutor Amsterdam: “Amsterdam is a hospitable city, but not for people with bad intentions. Our experience from previous cases is that these British fugitives also commit crimes in ou region. We make Amsterdam a saver city with the arrests and extradition of these fugitives.

David Armond, International Director for SOCA: "Our experience in Spain proves that these campaigns make ex-pat communities a hostile environment for UK fugitives. We have already achieved some outstanding results with our Dutch partners; this appeal aims to build on this success and ensure that the Netherlands is not seen as an easy hiding place for UK criminals." Guus Wesselink, director foundation M.: “M. or Crimestoppers The Netherlands is an effective tool against organised crime. Each day 40 actionable tips are going to the police and other organisations. Also most wanted British criminals will have to fear for arrests now during this effective cooperation between police forces and Crimestoppers in England and Holland.” Lord Ashcroft, KCMG, Chair of Crimestoppers: “These criminals think they’re safe hiding in the Netherlands, but it takes only one call to Crimestoppers to bring them back to the UK to face justice.

We need the public’s help to catch these fugitives so please contact Crimestoppers anonymously if you know anything by telephoning 0800 7000 in the Netherlands or 0800 555 111 in the UK. Alternatively people can visit our website to pass on information.”
